You might, from your appearance, be the wife of Lucifer, ” said Miss Pross, in her breathing. “Nevertheless, you shall not get the better of me. I am an Englishwoman.

About This Quote

In Charles Dickens’ original fairytale "A Christmas Carol", a poor old man named Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts, namely the Ghost of Christmas Present, the Ghost of Christmas Past and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. In the end, Ebenezer Scrooge vows to change his ways and be a better man. In this quote from "A Christmas Carol", Miss Pross tells him that he is not fit to be Scrooge's wife. Although he might have been a great business man before, she comes to her conclusion from the fact that he looks like a common drunkard.

However, this is not a complete insult as there are many wealthy people who do not look good in a picture. She also gives him a chance to redeem himself which gives him hope for being a better person.
